What is Supervisor Neutrality?

  • A supervisor is not to take sides, act as a go-between, or share personal feelings regarding either parent.
  • A supervisor is not to view communications sent by one parent to another or moderate conversations either during or after visitation.
  • A supervisor does not decide how parents should communicate, regardless of their situation.  This may be decided by the court.
  • A supervisor does not police the child's cleanliness during the visit, exposure to germs, or dietary requests.  While medical dietary restrictions are supervised, it is not the supervisor's job to police the wishes of the custodial parent when the visiting parent provides food.
  • A supervisor remails a neutral third party at all times.  You may be referred to the court, mediator or guardian et liem.

Visit information for visiting parents

Plan ahead as to places and activities you may share with your child.

Bring appropriate materials for snacks, diapers, crafts and activities.

While these items may or may not be available, part of the supervisor's job is the tell the court how prepared you are to conduct your visit with your children.

Involve children in deciding on locations and activities.

Do not discuss with the children, the other partner, or the court situation. Remain upbeat with your child.

Pay attention to your child.  Do not spend excess time on tablets, phones, or talking with other people. This is your time with your child.

Visitation preparation for custodial parents

  • Remain positive in anticipation of the visit so as to put the children at ease.
  • Explain to the children where and when the visit will occur; who will be there and that a neutral third party will be there to make sure they are comfortable and safe.
  • Do not question your children about the visit either before or after.  Notes will be provided to the court and the guardian et leim is one if assigned.  However, if the children choose to speak about the visit, let them without asking prying questions.
  • Avoid negative comments regarding the other partner or visit.

Visitation preparation for children.

Explain the process to the child in an age-appropriate way.

Answer questions they have in a neutral way.

Talk to them about the location

Domestic Violence and Supervision

Domestic violence affects one in three women and one in seven men in the United States in their lifetime. In 50 percent of cases in which a child is in a domestically violent home, that child is at risk of injury, whether intentional or not.  Supervised visitation not only protects a child from potential injuries, but keeps parents separate as a third party does the exchange; and can address false accusations.  Supervised Visitation protects everyone.
